NAPLES, Italy — The odd-sounding, sluggish beep of the Telepass affixed to the car windshield doesn’t mean the system’s battery is out of juice. Due to “technical difficulties,” the little gray boxes customers have leased through the Navy Exchange, the ones that allow motorists to use the express lanes at the toll booths on Italy’s highways and bypasses, temporarily have been deactivated, said base officials at Naval Support Activity Naples.

Navy Exchange personnel are working the issue and expect to have it fixed by Friday, according to a message from the base public affairs office. In the meantime, motorists are asked to not use the reserved Telepass express lanes on the various toll roads, which include the autostrada and Tangenziale.

The toll costs 65 euro cents one way. The Telepass lanes are marked with yellow arrows on the roadway and large yellow signs above the booth.

NEX/Telepass officials are not available Monday or Tuesday to explain the technical difficulties that led to the stoppage or provide other information, such as if only Naples-based personnel are impacted.

The base announcement said that the NEX is waving the 5 euro monthly service fee for April.
