SAN QUIRINO, Italy — This small community about six miles southeast of Aviano Air Base will host a large gathering of Americans and Italians for the second straight year.
The Italian-American Friendship Fest is set for Sunday at the Parco Villa Cattaneo.
While much of the day will be devoted to food, fun and friendship, there’s a serious side as well. A group of Italian firefighters will be joined by American counterparts from the base to remember those in their profession who gave their lives while trying to save others in the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks in New York City. The Italians have remembered the sacrifices each year on the anniversary date. The ceremony starts at 11 a.m., with a Mass and speeches by local dignitaries planned.
The day’s events kick off with a noncompetitive march/race at 9 a.m. The Alpini Association of San Quirino, Aviano and Montereale will then be the host for a free lunch. Paolo Tarchi, a base spokesman, said organizers are planning to serve at least 2,000 people.
Following lunch, a tent will display locally made products for sampling. Italian bands will play from noon to 6 p.m., with various other entertainment set for kids and adults.
The Honorary Squadron Commanders Association, composed of Italian political and business leaders in communities around the base, will be the host for the event. It is sponsored by the city of San Quirino and Pordenone province.
Parking will be available near the park. The 31st Logistics Readiness Squadron will run shuttle buses to the event from base. To reserve a seat, call DSN 632-7666 or 0434-30-7666.
