Another Iraqi unit in southwestern Baghdad has taken over responsibility of its “battle space” from an American unit, U.S. officials said Monday.

In what was dubbed an “Iraqis in the Lead Ceremony” on June 15 at Patrol Base Latifiyah, Iraqi soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 4th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division took over from the U.S. Army’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division.

“The Iraqi army is an instrument that secures the peace, and they are fully capable of controlling this area themselves,” Col. Todd Ebel, 2nd BCT commander, was quoted as saying in a news release.

Local sheiks and the mayor of Mahmudiyah attended the ceremony.
