YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan — Whether you break your leg skiing in Colorado, or fall out of a palm tree in Fiji, Tricare wants servicemembers and their families to know if something happens, Tricare will take care of them.

With many servicemembers traveling for the holidays, Tricare, the U.S. military’s health plan, is trying to get word out that a little preparation can go a long way.

“Your health is your number one priority,” said 1st Lt. Robert Flemming, flight commander for Tricare at Yokota Air Base, Japan. “If you need emergency care, don’t hesitate, go to the emergency room to get it.”

Flemming explained that if you go to the emergency room and have to pay a bill afterward, you can file with Tricare for reimbursement. Emergency care is defined by Tricare as treatment for a sudden or worsening medical condition that threatens life, limb or eyesight.

For urgent care, which is non-emergency care that could worsen if not treated, Tricare advises servicemembers to seek treatment at the nearest Military Treatment Facility or Tricare Network Provider. A list of MTFs can be found online at www.tricare.osd.mil/mtf.

Routine medical treatment should be coordinated through a servicemember’s Primary Care Manager at their home installation, Flemming said.

For servicemembers traveling to remote areas where military treatment facilities are scarce, there is another option for treatment. By contacting International SOS, servicemembers can have Tricare arrange medical assistance.

“Coordination is key,” said Flemming, adding that if they do have a medical emergency and receive non-military aid, they should follow up by contacting the Tricare support center.
