CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — The Defense Department announced Wednesday the death of a III Marine Expeditionary Force Marine deployed to Afghanistan.

Lance Cpl. Phillip C. George, 22, of Houston died Aug. 18 from enemy small-arms fire while conducting combat operations near Taleban, in eastern Afghanistan, according to a Pentagon press release. George was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

George and an Afghan soldier were killed during a skirmish with Taliban militants, who have vowed to disrupt parliamentary elections scheduled for Sept. 18.
