The United Service Organizations, often known for bringing stars to the troops, might help make a few members of the Naples military community famous next month.

The organization is putting on a version of “American Idol” for three nights in June, with the audience members eliminating their least favorites and eventually choosing a winner.

“It’ll be fun to watch — just like the real ‘American Idol,’” said Sabrina Pullido, USO center manager.

The judges won’t have as much say in Naples, though, as they do on the television show. Pullido said the organization hopes to have 12 contestants start out on June 16. Those attending that show will vote for their favorites. All the shows will be held at 7 p.m. in the high school multipurpose room.

The four contestants with the fewest votes won’t participate at the next show on June 23. Four others will be gone after the second show as well, leaving four contestants to compete in the June 30 finals.

The winner will receive two tickets for a USO-sponsored trip to Oktoberfest in Munich and the other three finalists will receive gift baskets.

Any military ID cardholder 15 and older is eligible to participate. Auditions are set for 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. June 1 at the Capo Reel Time Theater and 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. June 2 at the support site community center.

Contestants will sing to the music provided by a disc jockey.

Pullido said the event is designed to appeal to the entire community. Admission to the performances is free. The USO will sell food and drinks.

Other community-based entertainment acts are being lined up to fill in between performances.
