SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — More than 300 people participated in the inaugural Surface Navy Association-Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force 5K Family Fun Run and Walk here Friday afternoon.

Each person paid either $10 or 1,000 yen to participate. Proceeds are earmarked for the Sei Fuen Children’s Home in Sasebo, said Cmdr. Michael Little, base operations officer and an organizer of the event.

Sasebo Naval Base is positioned shoulder to shoulder with the JMSDF along the India and Juliet basins.

“We live and work, all right here together, all the time. Yet, we spend most of the year without communicating all that much with each other,” said Little. “This event is about the exercise, physical fitness, the holidays, communicating with each other, family and friendship.”

The event started and ended at the Tominaga Building, the base headquarters, following a route through the base. Traffic was stopped between 3:30 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. to make way for participants.
