A recently organized group responsible for assisting military reservists and their employers in Europe will conduct a training workshop for volunteers interested in joining its staff.

The European Committee of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve will conduct the session at Stuttgart Marriott Hotel in Sindelfingen, Germany, on Jan. 15-16.

Walter G. Varten, a retired Air Force brigadier general, was appointed by the Department of Defense as chairman of the committee, which joins 54 similar organizations representing the U.S. states and territories.

Varten said in a news release that the group was formed to handle the increasing number of reservists living and working in Europe, and the Defense Department’s growing reliance on Reserves. The organization covers all NATO countries, and faces unusual challenges since about one-third of all National Guardsmen and reservists in Europe work for non-U.S. companies for which U.S. laws do not apply.

While the committee does not pay staff members, it will pay some travel costs, lodging and per diem for the seminar. Training will be for unit liaison representatives — the first line of contact for reservists and Reserve units in matters concerning mobilization — and ombudsmen — who mediate between employers and reservists in understanding one another’s rights and laws.

Training will be conducted by DOD representatives.

Those interested in attending the training session or in additional information on the group should contact Varten by e-mail at ESGREurope@aol.com, or by calling DSN 430-8864 or commercial (+49) (0) 711-489-4813.
