Group is ‘adopting’ troops
For the third year in a row, a California-based charitable organization is seeking volunteers, donations and eligible military families for its Christmas "adoption" program.
Homefront America is encouraging both donors and families looking for help for the holidays to apply to the program at their Web site: www.homefrontamerica.org.
"The program is open to all active full-time enlisted personnel and their families," said Mamie Yong Maywhort, an organizer with the group. "Priority will be given to junior deployed enlisted families. Due to the program’s increased popularity, families are encouraged to mail in their applications as soon as possible."
The program brings donors together with military families that might be in need of assistance. Because of the group’s location and logistics, members said, families from Southern California are the main targets.
Donations can be taken in several forms: cash, "in-kind" donations, appliances, computers and other miscellaneous goods that can help families.
There is no minimum amount for donations, which are tax deductible.
Military families seeking help can apply for the program at the group’s Web site.
