NAPLES, Italy — The commissary at the Gricignano support site could be closed on Friday, depending on how a planned strike affects the store, officials said Tuesday.
Labor union representatives have said that all Italians who work at the support site are eligible to take part in the strike, and strikers are expecting support from Italian employees from a number of the base’s departments, to include the commissary and Navy Exchange.
A public affairs office notice stated the commissary would be closed on Friday, but a final decision won’t be made until Friday morning when commissary management can determine whether the store can run with the number of employees who do show up, said Gerri Young, Defense Commissary Agency spokeswoman.
The Navy Exchange has announced it will remain open for business on what is one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Operating hours are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday.
Italian workers plan to picket the front and back gate of the support site early Friday morning, and continue for several hours.
