RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany — It took a jury about an hour Thursday afternoon to find Air Force Staff Sgt. Thomas J. Moreno not guilty of an indecent act with a child under 16.

Moreno, 28, of the 821st Support Squadron out of Thule Air Base, Greenland, did not comment after the trial at the urging of his defense attorney, who also declined to comment.

The two-day court-martial included testimony from the 9-year-old girl who accused Moreno of inappropriately touching her in 2005.

She said it happened at Moreno’s off-base apartment near Ramstein, his previous duty station, when she was sitting on his lap as her father and younger brother slept on a nearby couch.

Moreno told military investigators he may have touched the girl accidentally. He knew the girl and her family through a local cultural organization.

Stars and Stripes does not identify the alleged victims of sexual assault.

The lead defense attorney called the government’s case against Moreno “over-inflated.”

He said prosecutors failed to prove Moreno touched the girl for sexual gratification and noted that she testified it could have been accidental.
