UIJEONGBU, South Korea — A U.S. soldier sentenced to 10 months in South Korean prison in connection with an adulterous relationship argued in court Friday for a reduced sentence, saying he felt remorse for his actions and didn’t realize he was breaking local laws.

Sgt. Jin-hong Han, an American, admitted in December to adultery and breaching the promise of marriage as he told his South Korean girlfriend he would marry her if she had sex with him.

On Friday, Han and his lawyer told a local judge that his wife was divorcing him and that he had not seen the woman who was his girlfriend since August. The women have said that in the time they knew Han, he lied about his income, Army rank, marital status and intentions.

Han also said that publicity about his case, including articles in Stars and Stripes, has made him suffer. His lawyer, Jung Jin-sung, offered copies of Stripes articles to the judge.

Han declined to answer questions from Stripes after the court hearing.

The court will decide on Han’s appeal on May 12.
