GI killed in Afghanistan ID’d as Italy-based
The Department of Defense has identified a soldier killed Thursday in Afghanistan as a member of the Vicenza, Italy-based 74th Infantry Detachment.
Sgt. 1st Class John D. Morton died in Shah Wali Kot when his dismounted patrol came under small arms fire.
The 31-year-old was from Stanton, Ky., was a member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade’s long-range surveillance unit.
A memorial service for Morton is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the base chapel on Caserma Ederle in Vicenza.
