Getting Personal: UMUC's Abrahamson — A healer and a teacher
Robert-Louis Abrahamson, Ph.D., of Philadelphia, has been an instructor for the University of Maryland University College for the past 25 years, teaching literature, grammar and other classes at RAFs Alconbury and Lakenheath. The 55-year-old is also an author, has a meditation CD coming out soon, is in the process of working on another self-help book with a Hollywood psychiatrist, and studies and teaches the Japanese healing art of Reiki.
What, or who, are you, in a philosophical sort of way?
I’m a teacher and a healer. Those are the best words to say. Teaching comes naturally to me; I want to share my enthusiasm. For healing, all of these alternative methods were similar to the medieval … views I studied in literature.
It’s a Japanese spiritual healing technique. It’s not religious. I’m able to open up the healing energies and then focus them toward someone else that needs it.
Does it work?
One of my students had an awful leg injury that came back up. She was on crutches. During the class I looked at the leg, sending energy. She said at the end of the class ‘my leg doesn’t hurt anymore.’ My son was getting migraine headaches and I put my hands on his head. It worked, and now he does Reiki himself.
Is this something you want to share with others?
I want to get in touch with different groups on base and talk to them, show them what this is about, and offer my services to them.
Do you think that military members, base civilians and their family members would benefit from this?
Yes. For one thing, there are a lot of stresses, from being in another country, deployments, the hours you work and the demands on you. This is putting the value back in life.
What classes have you taught at UMUC and what books have you written?
[Among other topics] Shakespeare, the Bible as literature, African-American literature, Greek mythology, plus writing classes and speech. I’ve written books on writing, technical writing, and one book that was used as the English 101 textbook. It’s now out of print. [The text] was designed for us military adults. It was at a price that was more affordable than most textbooks.
You’re writing another book with a Hollywood psychiatrist?
It will be called ‘Emotional Wisdom.’ It’s a self-help book. He helps you get straightened out from your problems with his ways and proven methods. But once you’ve reached that state of equilibrium, then you move over to my content. I talk about using literature and mythology and reading your own life as a poem in order to attend to your inner voice of wisdom.
This book won’t be out for a while, but you’ve got a CD coming out? What is it?
It’s called a ‘Journey Through the Seasons: Meditations on the Five Chinese Healing Energies.’ It’s guided meditations with poetry that are good for stress, relaxing. Some have said it helps put them to sleep. That’s good, I guess. It’s calming, stimulating … to call on all sorts of healing powers to yourself.”
