Lavette Williams is a 34-year-old Riverside, Calif., native and mother of three who recently claimed Lakenheath’s “Top Model” competition. The former Air Force staff sergeant won a 700-pound ($1,300) gift certificate with the London-based modeling agency New Faces, which supplies videographers and talent scouts with models in the U.K. and the U.S.

What do you do when you are not winning modeling competitions?

I work as a telephone operator at RAF Mildenhall.

Have you done any modeling in the past?

Nothing like that. Growing up in California around Hollywood and all that, people have always said that I should get into acting or modeling, but this was my first time to give it a shot.

Did you think you had a chance to win?

Honestly, I really wanted to take second place so I could get that free day spa treatment. Being about 12 years older than most of the competitors, I really didn’t think I would win, to be honest.

How do you think you won then?

I think I scored well on the questions. I outsmarted a lot of them with my answers.

For example?

When they asked who was our fashion icon, I mentioned Beverly Johnson. She never compromised who she was as she grew older. She aged gracefully and reinvented herself.

What does your win say about staying beautiful as you grow older and have kids?

You can age and still look good. Age really is a state of mind and not a number.

What does your husband think of your new title?

He loves it. He tells everyone, “I’m so married to Lakenheath’s ‘Top Model.’”

What happens if this leads to bigger and better things with the London modeling agency?

It would be amazing. But even if nothing happens, I still feel great for this much. I tell people if there’s something out there you’ve always dreamed of doing, at least go for it. You’ll never know unless you give it a shot.
