According to German media reports, the country’s minister of traffic is pushing for new regulations that will make it mandatory for motorists in the country to use all-weather or winter tires during harsh weather conditions.
The change would mean little to U.S. motorists in Germany because U.S. Army Europe-registered vehicle owners are already required to follow those guidelines.
Currently, Germany’s regulations state that “adequate” or “appropriate” tires should be used according to road and weather conditions. But Peter Ramsauer, Germany’s minister of traffic, said in a news release that the current regulations needed to be more precise because the current law “is a free ticket for slides.”
If the new law goes through, only winter and all-weather tires will be allowed in colder months.
Tom Lorenzini, registrar at the USAREUR Vehicle Registry, couldn’t say whether a new law would require adjustments to existing USAREUR policy.
