YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea — Following the stateside trend, gas prices for on-base consumers in South Korea and Guam will jump by an average of six cents for the month of April, officials said Tuesday.

Army and Air Force Exchange Service stations in those two locations adjust their prices monthly; at locations in Japan, a fixed price is set for the entire year.

According to an AAFES spokesman, premium unleaded fuel in South Korea will jump from $1.81 per gallon to $1.87 per gallon. Regular unleaded will increase from $1.62 to $1.68; diesel will go from $1.61 to $1.67.

On Guam, premium unleaded will go to $1.88 per gallon and regular unleaded will jump to $1.67. Guam’s March prices were unavailable.

AAFES prices at pumps in Guam and South Korea have risen by about 10 cents since February.

“AAFES remains committed to providing the fairest pump prices possible,” an AAFES news release stated. “The slight increase AAFES’ customers will find at the pump in April is still considerably less than drivers in CONUS (the continental United States) are experiencing.”

Gas prices in the States have reached record levels in recent weeks. Last week, prices hit a record-high average of $1.80 per gallon for all grades, according to industry analysts.

Experts attribute the increases to a combination of factors: low supplies, increased demand as spring and Memorial Day travel approaches and even an extra hour of light from daylight savings time, analysts said.

Prices are highest in California, with most grades reaching $2.20, according to the Department of Energy.

“Gas prices, as a whole, have been on the rise since the beginning of 2004,” AAFES said in announcing the new prices. “Crude-oil prices and cold weather in many parts of the country have contributed to the rising price at the pump.”

South Korea and Guam prices are based on the U.S. Department of Energy averages from the previous four-week period, officials said.

At an SK Gas station in the Kangnam ward of Seoul on Tuesday, gas prices were $4.83 per gallon for unleaded and $2.95 per gallon for diesel.
