Vice Adm. Richard K. Gallagher took over as deputy commander of U.S. European Command, and earned his third star Wednesday, in a small ceremony at the Pentagon, according to a EUCOM news release.

Gallagher replaces Army Gen. William “Kip” Ward, who recently became the first commander of newly created U.S. Africa Command.

Gallagher previously served as the director of the EUCOM Plans and Operations Center, responsible for advising the EUCOM commander on operational issues, including command and control of U.S. forces that stretched from Iceland to South Africa, the release stated.
