ARLINGTON, Va. — Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld nominated Army Brig. Gen. Kathleen M. Gainey, a key logistics official in Iraq, for a second star, according to a Pentagon announcement Tuesday.

Gainey now serves as deputy chief of staff for resources and sustainment in the Multi-National Force-Iraq organization, a job she took after a stint at the Pentagon as director of force projection and distribution in the Army’s “G-4” (for logistics) Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff.

Gainey, a career logistics officer, is no stranger to the Middle East.

She deployed to Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm in 1991.

She also spent time in Germany, commanding the 7th Corps Support Group in Bamberg from July 1998 to 2000, followed by two years as chief of the Joint Operations Division, U.S. Transportation Command at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.

The Senate must approve Gainey’s promotion to major general.
