BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Tribune News Service) — A man died this weekend in a rappelling accident at Stephen’s Gap, a cave featuring a 143-foot pit that was the site of another fatal fall in April.

Officials from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as 20-year-old Phillip Whitehead, who served in the Army and was stationed at Fort Campbell. A TV station, WAAY, reported that Whitehead was from Florida and climbing with a friend when the accident occurred.

The call came in around 6 p.m. Sunday night, according to news reports.
