Vice Adm. James G. Foggo III, commander of the Naples, Italy-based U.S. Sixth Fleet, was tapped Wednesday to serve in a top Navy post, the Pentagon announced.
Foggo will hold on to his current rank as the next director of Navy Staff at the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations in Washington, the Pentagon said.
A replacement for Foggo has not yet been announced.
Besides heading Sixth Fleet, Foggo serves as deputy commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa.
U.S. Sixth Fleet, a major theater during the Cold War, has received new attention in recent years because of the Syrian civil war, the spread of militant groups in North Africa and Russia’s growing assertiveness.
