The landing zone at a strategically important U.S. base in Baghdad has been expanded to accommodate more helicopters, officials said.

Forward Operating Base Loyalty is home to some of the troops involved in the “surge,” an addition of nearly 30,000 U.S. troops in Baghdad. Making sure they are able to move between bases is of essence to the plan, and helicopter travel is one of the most common ways of moving troops and material.

The helipad at Loyalty was expanded by troops from Company A, 2nd Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, along with the 20th Engineer Battalion and the 1169th Engineer Group.

Soldiers from the 1st Brigade, 9th Iraqi Army Division and an Iraqi civilian contractor also helped.
