KADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa — Firefighters here welcomed some help last week — all the way from Florida.

Eleven Reserve airmen from the 482nd Civil Engineer Squadron at Homestead Air Force Base have given a boost to Kadena’s 18th Civil Engineer Squadron firefighters, said Tech. Sgt. Burchell Franklin an assistant chief of operations.

With 26 of Kadena’s 140 firefighters deployed for the war on terror, the reservists are taking up the slack while also conducting their annual two-week training. The airmen arrived April 18 and are to leave April 30.

Monday they and their Kadena counterparts practiced firefighting techniques on a burning mock aircraft. They’ve also drilled on structure and vehicle fires, as well as completed required certifications.

“This is a great opportunity to work hand-in-hand with the active-duty force,” said Tech. Sgt. Ernest Jillson, a crew chief with the Reserve unit. She said she is scheduled to deploy to Iraq soon.
