KADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa — Fleet Activities Okinawa was one of 19 Navy and Marine Corps commands to receive a Navy Safety Excellence Award during an Oct. 4 ceremony in Washington.
The award, given during the fourth annual Secretary of the Navy Safety Excellence Awards ceremony, acknowledged the command, a tenant command on Kadena Air Base, for cutting on-duty mishap rates by 90 percent since 2003 and off-duty accident rates by 100 percent, according to the Naval Safety Center Public Affairs Office.
At the same time, the command increased seat belt usage to 90 percent during fiscal year 2004.
The secretary of the Navy established the Safety Excellence Awards program to recognize Navy and Marine Corps commands that sustain high levels of both mission success and safety performance, according to the Naval Safety Center.
