YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — Meet the Couch Potato family. They sit around all day at their jobs and at school, come home, eat junk food and veg out in front of the television or computer.

In the Navy, at least one member of the family is reasonably fit — the sailor who takes the physical readiness test.

But true “fitness isn’t just about the fighter,” said Kyle Rhodus, Yokosuka’s athletic director. How the family is doing plays into both the mental and physical health of the sailor and is a part of the Navy’s expanded focus on families, he said.

“It’s not just about the sailor being ready to fight; it’s about the whole family being healthy,” said Rhodus.

That’s the crux of the April 5-12 Fit Family Week at Navy bases throughout the Pacific.

Events and activities — from family dodge ball to healthy dining-out meals — are planned at bases in Japan, Okinawa, South Korea and Guam.

Yokosuka families will get Fit Family passports, in which they can collect stamps at more than 30 of the week’s events at Yokosuka and Ikego and Negishi housing areas, including a three-kilometer race, yoga, bowling and kayaking. And there’s no need to give up the video games, because another event is the Dance, Dance Revolution video-game competition at the Arcade.

With enough stamps in their passports, families can enter a drawing to win a trip to Disneyworld, Rhodus said.

While many of the events are just for Fit Family Week, Rhodus said, the base also will showcase such regular Morale, Welfare and Recreation offerings as its Movin’ Mommas stroller walk and the PT for Tots.

“We hope that by the end of the week, we ignite a fire to make healthy choices and to do these things together as a family,” Rhodus said. “It’s a challenge at first, but it’s usually just a matter of getting started. Once you make it a part of your lifestyle, it’s easy to continue.”
