CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A fire late Saturday afternoon destroyed a carpenter’s shop at Sasebo Naval Base’s Maebata Ordnance Facility.

According to Navy spokesman Charles T. Howard, no injuries were reported.

“The fire is fully contained and at no time was any population in danger,” Howard stated in a news release. “Ordnance storage areas were never in danger from the fire.”

Commander Naval Forces Japan Fire Department units stationed at the facility responded in two minutes to the 4:08 p.m. alarm; other units from the main base fire station arrived at the scene at 4:20 p.m. to assist, Howard said.

“After containment, fire scene commanders determined it was too dangerous to insert firefighters inside the building,” he said. “They will remain at the scene as the fire is fully extinguished.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation, the release stated.
