PBS will provide preliminary funding for a two-hour documentary that focuses on Latinos in the U.S. military, according to a report in Thursday editions of USA Today.

Hector Galán will direct "The War Within," tentatively set to air in September 2011, the paper reported.

Galán helped provide footage about Hispanic war veterans for Ken Burns’ multipart World War II PBS series, "The War," in 2007.

That came after Hispanic groups protested that Hispanics had been left out of Burns’ 14½-hour project, USA Today noted.

About a half-hour of footage was added to the series, including interviews with an American Indian and two Hispanic war veterans.
