Hey, ladies! Do you want instant fame? If so, all you have to do is get with a well-known footballer and smile for the cameras.
That’s because you’ve just become part of the sisterhood of Wags, the wives and girlfriends of famous footballers.
Once in a relationship with a big-time football player, a girl is labeled a “Wag” and thrown in the limelight by the tabloids.
The United Kingdom’s AOL Entertainment Web site takes it a little too far with a ranking system of Wags linked with England footballers.
Blonde bombshell Gemma Atkinson, with Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo, is currently at the No. 1 spot.
Perhaps the most famous Wag of them all is former Spice Girls member Victoria Beckham, wife of David Beckham, who sits at a lowly No. 13 position.
In 2006, the British press gave intense media coverage to Wags during the World Cup in Germany. And more recently, in Estelle’s song “American Boy,” guest artist Kanye West rapped the lyrics: “But I still talk that CAAASH, ’cuz a lotta Wags want to hear it.”
As for aspiring Wags out there, hone your skills on the Wags board game made by Monopoly. Instead of owning streets and railway stations, the special Wags edition allows players to spend cash on hair salons, limousine firms and chic clothing stores, according to the gossip Web site wagsrag.com.
Football is not the only sport where Wags are identified. Cricket, Formula 1 auto racing and even golf have Wags, according to the AOL Web site.
Tiger Woods may be used to winning on the golf course but he also has the No. 1 Wag in the sport — his wife, Elin Nordegren, the Web site reported.
