AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy – An airman from the 31st Maintenance Squadron died late Wednesday night in a motorcycle accident.

Master Sgt. John J. Colpoys Jr., 39, served as a transient alert section chief, according to a news release issued Friday by the 31st Fighter Wing. His previous assignments included Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas, Misawa Air Base in Japan, Luke Air Force Base in Arizona and Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany.

The cause of the accident, which took place west of the base at about 11:20 p.m., is still under investigation. Services are pending.

“We are a close-knit family and when a tragedy like this occurs, every member of the Air Force feels it,” Brig. Gen. Jon A. Norman, the wing commander, said in the release. “We express our deepest sympathies to his family and those affected by this incident.”
