CAMP BUCCA, Iraq — A 73-year-old detainee at a U.S. military prison in southern Iraq died Sunday, officials said Tuesday.
The unnamed male died of natural causes, officials said, attributing the man’s death to “respiratory failure secondary to pneumonia,” according to a military release. A military doctor pronounced the man dead shortly before 3 p.m. at the Camp Bucca field hospital, officials said.
The man’s body will be returned to his family after the military completes an autopsy; that practice has been in effect as standard procedure for any detainees who die in custody, officials said.
