SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — Ernest J. King High School’s principal for the past five years is transferring to Okinawa to serve as principal of Kadena Middle School on Kadena Air Base.

Linda Connelly, named the Department of Defense Education Activity Principal of the Year in 2004, replaces Paula Miller, who is transferring to the DODDS- Japan administration as chief of staff, according to Jim Bowers, DODDS-Japan assistant superintendent.

DODDS-Pacific and Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools Guam will welcome more than a dozen new principals and administrators and 11 new assistant principals for the 2005-06 school year, according to an Aug. 6 Stars and Stripes report.

“It’s bittersweet for my husband and I to leave Sasebo,” Connelly said.

“King was my first principal position and, with the great staff here, we accomplished a lot of positives.

“I am looking forward to new challenges and working with middle school students at Kadena. But still, I am really going to miss the staff and the wonderful kids we have in Sasebo,” Connelly added.

Miller was not available for comment Wednesday afternoon.

E.J. King’s new principal has yet to be determined. A community panel will meet soon to offer a recommendation from various applicants.

Bowers said high school principals are selected in part on a community panel recommendation. These panels typically consist of command, teacher, student, principal and district representatives.
