SEOUL — “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” seemingly has moved off the fiction list and closer to reality at Yongsan Garrison.

Department of Defense Dependents Schools officials confirmed Tuesday that somebody stole a bag containing an unknown amount of money collected at the recent Seoul American Elementary School book fair.

The theft occurred from an on-base home of a Parent Teacher Organization member tasked with holding the funds, according to DODDS spokesman Charles Steitz, and the incident is under investigation by local law enforcement officials.

An e-mail sent to parents on Tuesday said $186 in checks were included in the bag, and that people affected by the theft should cancel their checks and contact the school to arrange for an alternate method of payment.

The e-mail said the PTO raised more than $4,000 in the fair and that anyone with questions should e-mail laralynn1@hotmail.com.

“We apologize for the loss and the inconvenience that this theft has caused you,” the e-mail said.
