The annual DODDS-Europe student jazz seminar, which celebrates 25 years, takes place at SHAPE, Belgium, on Jan. 12-17.

With the theme of “A Tribute to the Big Bands,” the seminar brings together students from throughout Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Europe to pay tribute to jazz greats such as Irving Mills and Duke Ellington.

This year, the Big Band Jazz Ensemble will consist of 26 students, and the Jazz Vocal Ensemble will feature eight students from DODDS-Europe schools. More than 115 students from 20 high schools auditioned for the 34 positions, according to a DODDS news release.

Jiggs Whigham, noted jazz trombonist, composer, conductor and educator, will again lead the seminar ensembles in three performances. A staff of DODDS-Europe music educators will help Whigham, conductor of the BBC Big Band in Great Britain and artistic director of the Berlin Jazz Orchestra, in the five days of instruction, rehearsal and performance.

Jazz Seminar students also will work with members of the NATO Jazz Orchestra, who will conduct sectional training and will perform for participants. The concert series schedule open to the public is:

· Jan. 15 — NATO Jazz Orchestra concert, SHAPE base theater, 8 p.m.

· Jan. 16 — school concert at SHAPE base theater, 2 p.m.; community concert at SHAPE base theater, 7 p.m.

· Jan. 17 — school concert at Brussels School, 10:30 a.m.
