The Pentagon announced Sunday that Warrant Officer Travis R. Tamayo, who was supporting the anti-Islamic State coalition, died Friday in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates.

He died in a non-combat-related incident that is under investigation, a statement said. It did not provide further details.

Tamayo, 32, of Brownsville, Texas, was assigned to the 202nd Military Intelligence Battalion out of Fort Gordon, Ga.

Tamayo was the 23rd American servicemember to die while supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led effort against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria — only three of which were killed in action — according to Defense Department statistics.
