The Defense Department on Saturday identified a Germany-based U.S. soldier who died Tuesday in Afghanistan.

Sgt. 1st Class Gregory A. Rodriguez, 35, of Weidman, Mich., died from wounds he received in Ana Kalay when his mounted patrol came under small-arms fire.

Rodriguez was assigned to the K-9 unit of the 527th Military Police Company, 709th MP Battalion, 18th MP Brigade, out of Ansbach.
