Worried about the recent spate of earthquakes? Is your family prepared?

The Tokyo Disaster Awareness Night 2003 is set for Monday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Tokyo American Club in Azabudai, near Tokyo Tower. It’s free, open to the public and will be conducted in English.

The closest subway station is Kamiyacho. There will be a shuttle bus from the Tokyo Tower parking lot to the American Club that evening.

Potential types of disasters in Tokyo will be discussed, as well as related resources that are available locally. Experts and local fire department representatives will be present, and there will be an earthquake simulator, firetruck and smokehouse demonstration.

Children are welcome to attend, and there will be related projects for them in the supervised “Children’s Corner.” They can climb on the firetruck, read stories, color and put on a real firefighter’s costume.

A disaster-preparation checklist that the U.S. Embassy representative will distribute is also available online for those who cannot attend the event.
