A male detainee died in a U.S. military facility in Iraq on Sunday morning from wounds sustained two weeks ago, the U.S. military command said Monday.

The man, whose nationality and age were not released, allegedly sustained the wound “while engaging coalition forces,” a Multi-National Force- Iraq news release stated.

“The detainee arrived at the 115th Field Hospital on June 18. He died of complications resulting from gunshot wounds,” the release stated.

Under a policy in place for all detainees who die in custody, the man’s remains will be transferred to his family after U.S. officials perform an autopsy, the release said.
