NAPLES, Italy — Drivers in Italy have until Thursday to use their current NATO coupons to pay for auto or home heating fuel. New gas coupons for the coming fiscal year went on sale this week at base exchange outlets.

Beginning Friday, Esso and Agip stations throughout Italy will only accept the new coupons. Old coupons can be returned to military exchanges for a refund of the original purchase price. Customers have until the end of December to turn in old coupons.

The new coupons have a similar look but with a slight modification to prevent counterfeiting. Thermal ink, which disappears when rubbed and reappears after a few seconds, is used on the NATO logo in the upper right part of the coupon.
