SEOUL — The Army community in Daegu gathered Thursday to honor a soldier who died last week, according to a news release.

Command Sgt. Maj. Wendell Velez, 6th Ordnance Battalion, was 54 when he died June 23, according to a 19th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) news release.

The cause of death is undetermined, pending medical investigation.

“The passing of this great leader is a tragedy and a great loss to Team 19, our Daegu community and the U.S. Army,” Brig. Gen. Raymond V. Mason, 19th commanding general, said in the news release. “Such a sudden event as this reminds us of the fragile nature of life.

“I remind you all to cherish the time we spend with our family and friends and ensure that we look out for everyone in our community.”
