The head of 7th Fleet has been nominated for a position on the Navy Staff.
If approved by the Senate, Vice Adm. William D. Crowder would be reappointed to his current rank and become deputy chief of naval operations for information, plans and strategy at the Pentagon, a Defense Department news release said.
The nomination for a new 7th Fleet commander has not yet been announced.
Crowder graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1974. Since then, he has served on several ships, including the USS Kitty Hawk, and done numerous stints at the Pentagon.
He became head of 7th Fleet in September 2006, replacing Vice Adm. Jonathan Greenert, who went on to the Navy Staff.
Greenert later got his fourth star and became head of U.S. Fleet Forces Command, replacing Adm. Gary Roughead, who became chief of naval operations.
