Crime watch: Animal rights activist jailed for threatening letters
EAST SUSSEX — A 51-year-old animal rights activist was sentenced to eight months in jail on Nov. 2 after pleading guilty to sending threatening letters to people connected with a Huntingdon business.
Janet Lawrence from Middlesex sent a series of 18 anonymous letters to people with links to Huntingdon Life Sciences, which tests products on animals, police said. One letter read in court referred to the recipient as a “sick, evil, perverted deviant,” and a “legitimate and priority … target.” “You have been warned,” the letter read, according to a news release.
Thieves damage trucks while siphoning diesel fuelNEWMARKET — Police are looking for suspects in the theft of an unknown quantity of diesel fuel, siphoned out of three trucks in an industrial area in Newmarket. Thieves caused an estimated 50 pounds in damage in removing the gas caps from the trucks sometime between 7 p.m. and 8 a.m., police said.
Police say drugs worth £70,000 found in carLOWESOFT — A 27-year-old man has been charged with possession and intent to supply cannabis after police stopped his vehicle and found a stash of the illicit drug worth an estimated £70,000 in the car on Nov. 5, police said. The man, Gary Reagan of Cambridge Road, also has been charged with resisting arrest and driving without a license or insurance, and was due in court last week, according to police.
Man suffers facial injuries from assault outside clubMILTON KEYNES — A 20-year-old man suffered serious facial injuries after being assaulted by three Asian males outside a club in the city center, Thames Valley police reported. The attacked happened at about 2:10 a.m. Nov. 4 outside Moods club, and required the victim to be hospitalized for several days, according to the police.
Suspects sought in robbery on Newmarket streetNEWMARKET — Police are looking for suspects in the mugging of a 26-year-old man on a Newmarket street the morning of Nov. 5.
The man was walking along Exing Road at about 2:45 a.m. when two white males in their mid- to late-teens approached him and demanded his wallet, police said. One man is believed to have been carrying a knife, according to the police report.
Finding of body prompts murder investigationOXFORD — Police in Oxford have opened a murder investigation after the body of a man was found at an address on Luther Street on Nov. 6.
Police discovered the body of the 40-year-old man — who has not yet been publicly identified — after going to the address on a different incident, according to a police report. A 40-year-old woman and two men are being held for questioning in the case, police said.
