YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea — Traffic on various roads on Yongsan Garrison’s South Post will be disrupted this weekend as work crews install high-tech lines in the ground below, officials said this week.

According to the Directorate of Public Works, the construction, to install communications lines for the 1st Signal Brigade, is to take place Saturday and Sunday.

“Flagmen will be on duty at all times to direct traffic on roads that will remain open during excavation work,” a DPW news release read. “However, some roads may be closed entirely for brief periods.”

According to the news release, the brunt of the construction would take place at the following locations:

• On Saturday, the intersection just inside Gate 52, on X Corps Boulevard, will be partially closed. The same construction will affect the intersection of X Corps Boulevard and 45th Division Road, in front of Commiskey’s club.

• On Sunday, the intersection of X Corps Boulevard and Welch Street, next to Building 7080, will be affected. No right turns will be allowed going on to the street from Army family housing units.

“The command regrets this inconvenience to the community and will restore roadways to normal as soon as possible,” the news release stated.

The construction is part of the Installation Information Infrastructure Modernization Program Pacific (I3MP) program, which aims to increase bandwidth for computer applications, improve telephone communications and link training ranges and simulations centers to classrooms.

The system is being implemented throughout the United States and the Pacific and European theaters. The total project is estimated at $250 million for South Korea, Japan and Okinawa, officials said.

Also this weekend, road work on Gate 7 is expected to be completed. The gate has been closed since last weekend to finish construction; the hours for Gate 7 and Gate 3 — changed to accommodate the work — will go back to normal.

Contact the DPW at DSN 724-4205 for further information on the closures.
