STUTTGART, Germany — Two members of the Stuttgart military community died early Sunday on the autobahn outside Heilbronn after their car and a truck collided. The car then burst into flames.

One of those killed was the spouse of a staff member assigned to the U.S. European Command.

The second person has still not been identified, said Jennifer Sanders, a spokeswoman for the 6th Area Support Group.

More information will not be released pending notification of the next of kin, EUCOM and the 6th ASG officials said.

The two people were driving in a U.S. model car when the accident with the truck occurred around 7:40 a.m.

Rescue crews at the scene could not extract the Americans because the flames were too intense, the newspaper Stuttgarter Zeitung reported. The truck was filled with thousands of copies of the German news magazine Der Spiegel.

On Monday, military assistance casualty officers were beginning to meet with family members.

Memorial services are being planned, Sanders said.
