LEWISTON, Mich. (Tribune News Service) — The U.S. Coast Guard has shared video of a rescue they made just an hour into 2020.

The rescue occurred at 1 a.m. on Jan. 1 when Air Station Traverse City received a call that a man had fallen though ice while riding his snowmobile in Lewiston.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, but not helicopters were able to get airborne due to a winter storm in the area.

The Coast Guard launched an MH-60T helicopter and flew a low visibility route to the scene despite ice accumulating on the aircraft. Crews arrived on scene within 20 minutes of the call and were able to airlift the man to safety.

“We are so proud to be your ‘Guardians of the Great Lakes’ and will continue to train and do our best to keep you and the community at large safe,” a post on Facebook reads.
