A private plane crashed off the coast of Mayport late Friday morning, but the pilot survived in good shape, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Not many details are available, but the U.S. Navy reports the private aircraft went down about 11:20 a.m., and Coast Guard officials said the crash was reported at 11:30 a.m. about three miles east of Mayport. A passing boater apparently got to the downed plane first, the Coast Guard said.

The pilot, identified as Bart Albert by Times-Union news partner First Coast News, was flying a single-engine 1961 Beechcraft Bonanza based in North Carolina, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Albert was transported to Morningstar Marinas on North Ocean Street in Atlantic Beach, where paramedics were waiting to check him out. He was listed in good condition, the Coast Guard said.

The FAA will investigate the crash.
