At a flea market at the Negishi housing area last year, one man brought a car to sell.

At Yokosuka Naval Base, community center instructors have sold kimono and obi.

People can find barbecues, baby clothes, books, rugs and used CDs — just about anything that might be found in the back of a closet.

Negishi, Ikego and Yokosuka each are hosting flea markets and swap meets Sept. 3 to help buyers and sellers find and exchange little treasures.

“Two times a year we provide an opportunity for people PCSing or trying to clean out their garage, to put stuff out — to make room and to make a few dollars,” said Tommie Daniels, who manages Morale, Welfare and Recreation at Negishi.

The event coincides with the permanent change of station season to help families reduce their household goods if they’re leaving and fill their new quarters if they’re arriving, he said.

Yokosuka’s community center holds a monthly swap meet, but the summer is often the busiest, said the center’s manager, Bo Du.

“It’s for the community to sell their wares,” she said. “It’ll give them a chance to mingle with the community, too.”

At Ikego, one of the smaller swap meets, sellers often bring clothing, especially baby clothes, said community activities program manager Robin Murphy.

Negishi’s event on Sept. 3 is accompanied by festivities. The flea market runs from 1 to 5 p.m. and coincides with the community’s summer concert at the community complex, Daniels said. The accompanying festival will feature two musical groups, a disc jockey, food and refreshments.

Tables at each event can be rented by status of forces ID card holders, and base residents can bring non-SOFA personnel to shop.
