NAVAL STATION ROTA, Spain — A Spanish civilian base employee remains in jail accused of sexually assaulting another Spanish worker at a base warehouse on Good Friday.

The Spanish newspaper Diario de Cadiz reported on Thursday that a 40-year-old man who works for the base’s Public Works Department is being held at a prison in the city of Algeciras.

A 31-year-old woman, who also works for the department, has accused the male worker of gagging her with tape and attacking her April 9 with a knife, the newspaper reported. She remains hospitalized with injuries to her arm, which required more than three dozen stitches, according to local media reports.

The Diario de Cadiz identified the man by the initials M.D.C.

The alleged incident occurred on a day when many Spanish workers had taken the day off because of the religious holiday.

Lt. Allie Freeman, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Navy on base, said that the case is being handled by local Spanish judicial and law enforcement authorities.

About 1,200 Spanish civilians are employed by Spain’s Ministry of Defense and work at various departments on base. About 3,000 U.S. military personnel are stationed at the Spanish military base.
