Vienna is a metropolis with a plethora of attractions, so if you only have a weekend to explore, make sure to visit these highlights.
Stop at the Gothic St. Stephen’s Cathedral in the center of Vienna to climb the 343 steps to the top of Old Steve, the south tower, for a panoramic view of the city and Vienna woods. Inside the cathedral, there are several pieces of fine artwork to spot and catacombs to be explored.
The streets leading away from the cathedral make up the inner city, or old town, and merit taking a few hours to explore. There, tourists will find shops, cafes and restaurants.
From the old town, it’s an easy jaunt to the summer residence of the Imperial Family, the baroque style Schönbrunn Palace. English-language tours of the state rooms are available, with special tours available for children. Outside enjoy a stroll in the Imperial Gardens.
Next to the palace is the Schönbrunner Tiergarten, the world’s oldest zoo, founded in 1752. The zoo’s animal enclosures sit among baroque buildings.
Another place to visit is the Hofburg Palace, which has extravagant Imperial apartments and an Imperial silver and porcelain collection. Don’t miss the Imperial Treasury, home to the crown jewels and many religious treasures. The Gothic chapel features a section where the Vienna Boys’ Choir performs.
Also located on the palace grounds is the Spanish Riding School, which has been the home of classic horsemanship for more than 400 years. See riders on white Lipizzaner stallions perform pirouettes and other precise movements to music. Be sure to make reservations to see the Saturday performances well in advance or you will have to settle for training session tickets.
Vienna boasts many museums worth visiting, including the Sigmund Freud Museum, which was once the home of the founder of psychoanalysis. The museum’s collections include his original furniture, antiques and other personal belongings including his ivory-handled walking stick and velour hat.
The MuseumsQuartier is a large complex housed in the former Imperial stables and contains museums, boutiques and restaurants. Inside, tourists can visit the Kunsthalle Wien, showcasing contemporary and classic modern art, and the Leopold Museum, containing collections of Austrian art and crafts from the 19th to 20th century. Also available inside are an ecology center, architecture museum and tobacco museum.
Travelers with children may want to visit the Circus and Clown Museum, with exhibits recognizing efforts of the clowns and circus performers that have entertained people for centuries.
