Next weekend — Nov. 10-12Valladolid, Spain: 32.73 pounds round trip

Fly Ryanair from London Stansted to Valladolid.

Valladolid offers weekend tourists plenty to see and do, all within walking distance. Begin at the tourist information center where a map highlighting the sights can be found.

The old quarter has many beautiful buildings. Among them is the unfinished cathedral, a highlight of which is the 1551 altarpiece. From the cathedral complex, you can visit the Diocesan Museum, with various carvings from several churches and other works attributed to artists such as Gregorio Fernandez and Juan de Juni.

A half-block south from the cathedral is the Cervantes House, now a museum. Once home to Miguel de Cervantes, author of “Don Quixote,” it now uses furniture and possessions to explain how noble families in the 17th century lived. You can also visit the Christopher Columbus House Museum in the building where the navigator died in 1506. It has various pieces and documents related to the discovery of America.

Farther from the city center is the National Museum of Sculpture and the Oriental Museum. The sculpture museum holds religious works from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. The Oriental Museum contains 14 rooms of Chinese and Philippine art.

Return to the city center for wine and food at one of the bars, pubs and cafes along Calle del Paraiso and Calle de Vincente.

Next month — Dec. 8-10Shannon, Ireland: 23.11 pounds round trip

Fly Ryanair from London Stansted to Shannon.

Shannon is a good starting place to explore the surrounding area. It is short on hotels, so stay in a charming one of the town’s bed and breakfasts.

Three miles from the Shannon town center is Bunratty Castle. The castle, the most complete and authentic medieval fortress in Ireland, is a terrific family experience. You can marvel at the mainly 15th- and 16th-century furnishings, tapestries and works of art, which capture the mood of the times. At night, the castle is the setting for year-round medieval banquets.

The village of Bunratty offers excellent shopping, including Avoca Handweavers and Bunratty Village Mills and Blarney Woollen Mills Complex. Many restaurants and pubs can be found here, including the famous Durty Nelly’s Pub.

Nearby is the village of Newmarket-on-Fergus, where you can find a footpath to Mooghaun Fort. Here, in 1854, an important discovery of Bronze Age gold ornaments including gorgets, necklets and bracelets was made. This, the “Great Clare Find,” was one of the largest discoveries of its kind made in Western Europe.
