AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy — Col. Joseph Ford will take command of the 401st Air Expeditionary Wing in a 10 a.m. ceremony Thursday at the base’s collocated club.

Ford, vice commander of the 366th Fighter Wing at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, takes command from Col. Joseph Abbott. Abbott will become the commander of the Reserve Officer Training Corps detachment at the University of Arizona.

The 401st is the only expeditionary wing in U.S. Air Forces in Europe. It features five units in four countries, with about 160 active-duty personnel and almost as many civilian counterparts. Primary missions include operations in the Balkans and high-altitude reconnaissance.
